Today we had great fun running sessions for children to help their emotional intelligence.
Using creative discussions, first they created a ‘moving faces’ octopus to identify emotions, what they feel like and what might bring these on.
They then moved on to create their angry/calm octopus; this helps children become more aware of triggers for angry/sad feelings and the strategies they can use to calm down.
Well done to all of those that attended! North Kent Mind are running sessions for children and young people each school holiday for FREE, keep an eye out for our next ones and come along.
North Kent Mind provide a supported housing service for 27 adults who have experienced mental health problems and now need some support to live independently.
On Saturday 2nd March, Ash Stone and Adam Palmer walked with their football team, Medway United Unver 12s East, as part of a 12 month fundraiser for North Kent Mind.
They set off from Strood and walked 7.5 miles to the Howard School in Rainham, completing this in 2 hours and 45 minutes.
As a result of the walk, they raised around £1000, bringing their total so far to £3660.
Great effort from all involved and all monies raised will be used for local services to make sure no one has to face a mental health issue alone!
Calli Malpas is a local musician and supporter of North Kent Mind who wrote the song, ‘A Hedgehog Named Bob’ which is featured on Our Creative Space.
Calli has just donated £87.00 to us via Virgin Money Giving from Spotify sales of the song.
Thank you, Calli
*Content Warning* Although this is quite an uplifting song and has a cute cartoon video, the lyrics briefly mention experience of suicidal ideation/thoughts.
A glitter jar is something your child can make and then use to help them feel calmer and less confused about their feelings. When words are not easy to find for you or your child, a Glitter Jar can help you talk to each other and helps your child understand how our thoughts and feelings link together. A glitter jar works well with children aged 4-11. But it can be used for children and young people of all ages to help with other mindfulness exercises such as mindful breathing.
For details on how to create glitter jars see the guide.
“Our Schools Worker, Sarah Murphy, has been working closely with Dartford Primary School via our KCC funded project, supporting the children to create their own glitter jars. The pictures below show the final results!”
Mental Health Awareness Week runs from Monday 10 May to Sunday 16 May 2021. This year, join the fight for mental health.
During this pandemic, millions of us have experienced a mental health problem, or seen a loved one struggle. And we’ve seen that the support we all need just isn’t out there.
For them, for us and for you – we must take this chance to step up the fight for mental health. That means fighting for change, for fairness, for respect and for life-changing support.
